Evaluation aid

Where RhodeCode wins, and where it doesn’t.

Most teams evaluating us have already looked at the alternatives. Here is an honest read of the differences, so you can disqualify us quickly if we are the wrong fit.

Method
  1. 00.1 Self-hosted editions only — we do not compare against multi-tenant SaaS.
  2. 00.2 Capabilities shipped in the base licence, not available as paid add-ons.
  3. 00.3 Compared against each vendor’s published documentation; list prices verified 17 Sept 2026.
  4. 00.4 Where we lose, the row says so. Check the claims before you buy.

Should you buy this?

Five questions · honest verdict

Answer these and the page will tell you to buy, to evaluate, or to look elsewhere. A wrong-fit customer costs us more than a lost deal, so this is not weighted in our favour.

  1. 01 Does your organisation run more than one version control system?
  2. 02 Can your source code sit in a vendor-operated cloud?
  3. 03 Do you have to evidence access control to an auditor or regulator?
  4. 04 Do you need CI, package registry and marketplace apps in the same product?
  5. 05 Do you have someone who can operate a self-hosted platform?

Answer the five

Nothing is scored until you answer. The verdict changes as you go, including to a recommendation that you buy something else.

Reasoning
  • Each answer adds a line here explaining what it means for fit — in both directions.
03Fit

Choose RhodeCode when

  • You have more than one version control system and no realistic date for consolidating them.
  • Your code cannot sit in a vendor cloud — regulation, classification or contract says so.
  • You need permission and audit semantics you can defend line by line to an auditor.
  • You want an open source core you could keep running even if the vendor disappeared.
  • You would rather pay per seat once than assemble four add-ons to reach compliance.

Look elsewhere when

  • You are all-Git and want the deepest possible CI, package registry and AI tooling in one product.
  • You want a managed multi-tenant SaaS with a free public tier for open source projects.
  • Your workflow depends on a large third-party marketplace of apps and actions.
  • You need a social coding network — public profiles, stars and discovery across the internet.
