RhodeCode vs GitHub: where each is stronger

GitHub Enterprise Server is the most widely known self-hosted platform and has the deepest ecosystem of any option here. RhodeCode is the answer when the repositories are not all Git, or when the permission model has to be defensible to an auditor.

Method How this page is built
00.1 Self-hosted editions only — we do not compare against multi-tenant SaaS.
00.2 Capabilities shipped in the base licence, not available as paid add-ons.
00.3 Verified against each vendor's published documentation, as of 2026-05.
00.4 Where we lose, the row says so. Check the claims before you buy.
01 Matrix

Self-hosted, side by side

Published documentation · 2026-05

Capabilities shipped in the base licence of each vendor's self-hosted edition — not what is reachable by buying add-ons.

● Accent marks a capability that is not in that vendor's base licence, ours included.

Bundled CI is our weakest row. RhodeCode integrates with Jenkins, Bamboo and generic webhooks rather than shipping a pipeline runner, and if you want CI, a package registry and a marketplace inside one product, the alternatives above are genuinely further along.

02 Qualify

Should you buy this at all?

Five questions · honest verdict

The verdict includes "look elsewhere", and reaches it on plenty of answers. Nothing is sent anywhere — this runs entirely in your browser.

01 Does your organisation run more than one version control system?
02 Can your source code sit in a vendor-operated cloud?
03 Do you have to evidence access control to an auditor or regulator?
04 Do you need CI, package registry and marketplace apps in the same product?
05 Do you have someone who can operate a self-hosted platform?
Verdict Answer the five

Nothing is scored until you answer. The verdict changes as you go, including to a recommendation that you buy something else.

03 Fit

Where each of us is the better answer

Neither list is hedged. If your situation is in the second column, the honest recommendation is to buy something else.

Choose RhodeCode when
You have more than one version control system and no realistic date for consolidating them.
Your code cannot sit in a vendor cloud — regulation, classification or contract says so.
You need permission and audit semantics you can defend line by line to an auditor.
You want an open source core you could keep running even if the vendor disappeared.
You would rather pay per seat once than assemble four add-ons to reach compliance.
Choose GitHub or another platform when
You are all-Git and want the deepest possible CI, package registry and AI tooling in one product.
You want a managed multi-tenant SaaS with a free public tier for open source projects.
Your workflow depends on a large third-party marketplace of apps and actions.
You need a social coding network — public profiles, stars and discovery across the internet.
What GitHub does better
The largest marketplace of apps, actions and integrations anywhere
Actions is a mature CI system in the same product, with a large action library
Copilot and the surrounding AI tooling are further along
A public social graph — profiles, stars, discovery — that has no equivalent here
Where RhodeCode is the better fit
Mercurial and Subversion repositories have no first-class home
Reviewer rules and branch protections apply to Git only
Per-subject IP rules are organisation-level rather than per subject
Published list is $252 per user per year against $75 here
