RhodeCode at the Interactive Geometry Lab

This article is part of our series where users speak about their experiences with RhodeCode Enterprise and how they use it in their day-to-day work. Today’s interview is with Dr. Daniele Panozzo (DP) postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zurich, answering question asked by Sebastian Kreutzberger (SK), CEO at RhodeCode.

Daniele Panozzo SK: Tell me a little bit about your organization and yourself.

DP: The Interactive Geometry Lab (IGL) is a research group at ETH Zurich. We do research in Computer Graphics focusing on real-time techniques that can be applied in video games, CG movies and architectural designs. All our work is downloadable from our website and some highlights are available in our youtube channel.

SK: When and why did you choose RhodeCode at the first place?

DP: We started using RhodeCode in the spring of 2011. We needed a system to organize a large set of small repositories, where each repository is used by 2 to 5 users. RhodeCode was easy to configure and it seemed a perfect fit for our purposes.

SK: How big is your team and how does a normal day with RhodeCode looks like?

DP: Our group in Zurich has 10 members. By counting all the external collaborators, we usually have ~ 30 RhodeCode users. The most important feature for us is the ability to easily manage users and permissions on a per-repository basis. Each project has a different set of users working on it, and very often some of them are not registered in the ETH LDAP system. Enabling each member of the team to create her own repositories and to generate guest accounts for the collaborators makes the management of the projects data and code very efficient and secure.

SK: What would you add or change at RhodeCode?

DP: I would like to have a console integrated in RhodeCode Enterprise that allows to directly execute HG commands on any managed repository without having to clone it locally.

SK: Interesting idea, we put it on the list. Daniele, thank you for your time. It is great to see that RhodeCode Enterprise powers the research at so many universities and labs all over the world and I wish you and your team all the best!
