As startup founders, Marcin and I have noticed that proverbial “pat on the back” often seems elusive and not within the job scope. Rarely do we get a pure, elevated, long lasting sense of accomplishment like we did last week when my team announced the biggest release in our history: the release of RhodeCode Enterprise 3.
185,000 lines, 20,000 hours, 400% Faster
Not only was the major upgrade RhodeCode Enterprise 3 twelve months in coming, we also had to balance an enormous amount of new support and feature requests with a desire to address the largest of enterprise control, compliance, and security requirements. Compliance and security is assured via integrated code reviews and server-side pull requests; access protection is done through extensive multi-hierarchical permission management; and code freezes and extensive change logs are now available for auditing purposes.
Additionally, the team touched, tested and strongly tuned nearly every of the 185,000 lines of the application’s source code in more than 20,000 hours of work. The security internally & externally was strongly improved, a lot was completely rewritten and the most-often-used commands and screens are now up to 400% faster and much more secure than they had been before!
We are more than proud that RhodeCode Enterprise 3 is now the fastest, most stable and most secure solution of its kind in the market which even let’s our own former standard RhodeCode Enterprise 2 fall behind in terms of performance and security.
Despite all of this good stuff and more, these features are not what we believe is so transformational about RhodeCode Enterprise 3 but the next, big thing we introduce now for the first time: Subversion support!
Native Subversion Support
RhodeCode Enterprise 3 is the first and only enterprise solution on the market to support all three main source code revision systems: Git, Mercurial, and Subversion. Not only is this multi-system support profound in its allowance of version control system choice, it opens up a path to a unified interface thus facilitating the transition to distributed control systems.
RhodeCode Enterprise 3 allows distributed development teams to choose the version control system, tools and workflows that they are most familiar with even if it includes all three of them. Not only does this support avoid forcing costly transitions and extensive learning curves, it empowers developers to use what they see as best fit for their environments.
A Milestone
We, Marcin, I, plus our investors, advisors and supporters, are truly proud of what the team got accomplished with our RhodeCode Enterprise 3 release. While it comprises a huge amount of enterprise-class updates including new security compliance and control features, APIs, and a new new user interface, we are most proud of our support of all 3 major players in version control: Git, Mercurial, and Subversion.
One of the things we as a company take pride in is our devotion to continual improvement based on customer feedback. Support for these 3 version control systems was one of the more challenging but impactful requests. It feels good to be at the forefront of making life easier for developers, DevOps and development managers.
